For years, Japan has been known for having the world’s longest life expectancy. But a new study found that Spain is on track to take Japan’s title by 2040.
Researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation used data from the 2016 Global Burden of Disease project to estimate the life expectancy of 195 countries between 2017 to 2040. They found that on average, people from Spain will live to 85.8 years, narrowly exceeding Japan (85.7), Singapore (85.4) and Switzerland (85.2).
But while other industrialized nations continue to rise in rankings, the United States is plummeting. The US will drop from 43rd to 64th place with a life expectancy of 79.8 years, the lowest among high-income countries.
Americans will live only 1.1 years longer on average by 2040, compared to the global rise of 4.4 years over the same period.
An increase in drug-related deaths plays a factor in America’s stalling numbers, CNN reported. In 2016, there were 63,600 accidental drug overdoses in data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The obesity rate is also at an all-time high in the US, with about 39.8 percent of adults considered obese, according to the CDC.
“In a substantial number of countries, too many people will continue earning relatively low incomes, remain poorly educated, and die prematurely,” IHME director Christopher Murray told CNN. “But nations could make faster progress by helping people tackle the major risks, especially smoking and poor diet.”
