我们在形容某事物急剧增长的时候，通常会用到“quickly、sharply、dramatically和significantly”这些副词。就比如：

　　1. multiply

　　multiply的本义是乘，使相乘，延伸为成倍增加、大幅增加的意思。

　　In warm weather these germs multiply rapidly.

　　2. surge

　　surge的本义是一个大波浪的汹涌奔流，作名词就有“陡增，剧增，急剧上升”的意思。

　　There has been a surge in house prices recently.

　　最近房价猛涨。

　　它也形容情感的涌起，翻涌。

　　She was overwhelmed by a surge of remorse.

　　悔恨一下子涌上了她的心头。

　　surge也作动词，也是“激增，陡增，剧烈上升”的意思。

　　The company's profits have surged.

　　公司的利润激增。

　　联想波浪向前涌的画面，surge也可以表示“涌动，蜂拥向前”。
