英语中有许多容易混淆的词，有些是同音异义，有些是形似异义，而有些是存在文化概念上的不同，今天这五组词就属于最后一种。

　　religion≠ethnicity

　　宗教≠种族

　　这两个词虽然存在一些重叠含义，但它们不能互换使用。

　　religion指的是你的信仰体系或对于某种程度上更高力量的崇拜(通常是上帝或神)。

　　Your religion refers to your system of belief or worship in a higher power of some kind (usually a God or gods).

　　而ethnicity则是指文化上被定义的身份。

　　Your ethnicity refers to your culturally defined identity.

　　historic≠historical

　　有历史意义的≠历史上的

　　historic指重要的历史事件，表示“有历史意义的;历史上著名的”，

　　The historic building was damaged in the fire.

　　这座著名的历史建筑遭到大火损毁。

　　而historical指过去发生的事情，或者“与历史相关的;根据历史改编的”。

　　His historical novel was based on that historic movement.

　　他的历史小说是以那场有历史意义的运动为原型的。

　　有一句话区分就是，

　　not all historical events are historic，

　　并非所有历史事件都具有历史意义。

　　unique≠special

　　独一无二的≠特别的

　　unique指“独一无二的”，开头的uni就是拉丁语中的“与众不同”(one of a kind)。

　　严格意义上来讲，地球上的每个人都是独一无二的。unique不具有情感上的倾向性。

　　Every person on earth is unique.

　　但如果你想表达某个人对你而言很重要，special更合适，它表示“特别的，不同寻常的，迷人的”。

　　This is a special day for me.

　　这对我而言，是特别的一天。

　　introverted≠shy

　　内向的≠害羞的

　　introverted和shy都表示性格特征，但表示的意思却不一样。

　　shy表示“害羞的”，指遇到新面孔时觉得不舒服，无所适从。

　　She tends to be nervous and shy.

　　她容易紧张害羞。

　　而introverted更像一个心理学概念，指通过个人追求来充实生命的能量，比如阅读或思考。

　　He is introverted and like to express himself in writing.

　　他很内向，喜欢在写作中表达自己。

　　anticipate≠expect

　　期待≠预期

　　这两个词都涉及对未来事件的预测，然而expect和anticipate反映的状态不一样。

　　当我们说expect，它反映了我们的精神状态;而anticipate指的是我们已经为预期发生的事情做好了准备。

　　When we expect something, it reflects our state of mind. When we anticipate something, we are already preparing for what we expect will happen.

　　I expect to see my friend.

　　我期待见我的朋友。

　　I anticipate that the project can go on well.

　　我期望这个项目可以进展顺利。
