近日，美国韦氏词典宣布重新定义单词“they”的含义，原先这一代词用来指代“他们”、“她们”和“它们”的复数概念，如今还可以用作单数。

　　不少网友惊呼，本来英文语法规则就复杂，这下更容易混淆了！

　　Merriam-Webster added a new definition of the word "they" to its dictionary, declaring the pronoun may be used to refer to a "single person whose gender identity is nonbinary".

　　第4条定义为新增条目，used to refer to a single person whose gender equality is nonbinary（指代一个性别认同并非二元的人）。

　　Nonbinary在这里指“非二元性别的”，也被广泛称作Genderqueer（性别酷儿），用来指称那些超越传统意义上对男性或女性的二元划分、不单纯属于男性或女性的自我性别认同。

　　韦氏词典在9月17日通过社交网络宣布了这一决定，这标志着官方对这个词的认可。随着非二元性别身份为人们熟知，they这个词用成单数也愈发普遍。

　　9月13日，英国歌手Sam Smith就曾宣布将自己的代名词改为“they”或“them”。
