The catastrophic fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral could have been caused by a smoldering cigarette or an electrical malfunction, according to Paris prosecutors on Wednesday. No signs of deliberate arson have been found after a two-month preliminary probe where investigators interviewed 100 witnesses and examined more than 1,200 clues. Prosecutors are now looking into the possibility of negligence and said they were opening a judicial investigation.
