One of the characteristics that sets humans apart from animals is the ability for artistic creativity. It is important that we nurture this precious skill and its ability to bring people together. I firmly agree with the idea that governments should invest more in the arts than in athletics. There are two factors that inform this view. I will detail these below.
To begin with, artistic creativity is an inherent part of human cultures, and it forms part of our cultural traditions in ways that athletics does not. Many countries have annual festivals that celebrate this creativity, and that bring people together in the process. These are important events for the communities that produce the art, but they also appeal to tourists, who flock to visit and experience these occasions. A great example of this is Thailand's Fire Festival. I went on holiday there last year and was lucky enough to experience this event, which involves the building of huge, brightly-colored floats that parade around the city at night. It is a very important cultural event in the Thai calendar, and the government allots money to each province to help them put on these dazzling displays. Since going there, I have also seen a documentary in my own country, which told us about the background of the festival and this helped make it internationally famous, too. It is of far more value to the country than an athletics event.
Another point to consider concerns the power of the arts to teach as well as amuse. While some sports events attract big crowds, they cannot compete with art galleries, museums, and live shows, which can entertain and educate locals and foreigners alike. An impressive illustration of this was when I went on an exchange program to England. I stayed in London, where there are some incredible museums that have been very well funded and are interactive and entertaining as well as informative. The Victoria and Albert Museum was my favorite, and we spent a full day there. It is one of the largest museums in the world and is stocked with huge collections of books, clothes, pictures, ceramics, and furniture, for example. I learned so much about how people used to live and how times have changed at many points in the past. I even learned things about my own country, too. This key cultural and historical resource has survived due to government funding.
In summary, I strongly agree with the idea that governments should focus more funding on the arts than on sports and athletics. Artistic festivals provide impressive spectacles to enhance cultural identities. Moreover, museums and galleries have great powers to amuse and inform us about traditions and history in ways that athletics never can.
