Whether Sundance breakouts "Brooklyn" and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" pull a "Boyhood" or "Whiplash," for example? Or what about Todd Haynes' "Carol"? Can it ride its Cannes buzz to finally nab the director a Best Picture nomination? Will "Inside Out" return Pixar to the big race? Does "Mad Max: Fury Road" have what it takes to be an extremely rare summer blockbuster slash Best Picture nominee?

Will they quickly return Quentin Tarantino, David O. Russell, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Steven Spielberg to the Oscar game? We have no idea. No one does.

We've got takes on the likes of Steve Jobs (played by Michael Fassbender), screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston), book editor Max Perkins (Colin Firth), transgender artist Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne, gunning for Oscar number two), infamous criminal Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp, gunning to gain our respect back), news anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and singer Miles Davis (Don Cheadle), just to name a male dominated few.

　　Speaking of male domination, it seems -- at least from the films that currently are on our radar -- that Sarah Gavron's "Suffragette," Jodie Foster's "Money Monster" and Angelina Jolie's "By The Sea" are the primary possibilities to give us a Best Picture nominee directed by a woman, but we sure hope some unexpected female-helmed contenders show up on the fall festival circuit.
