Is Rooney Mara already a sure thing?

　　Rooney Mara surprised many by taking home the Best Actress prize at Cannes, as many thought her co-star Cate Blanchett would take it -- or the two would share.

　　Whether we like it or not, the moment marked the beginning of Mara's campaign for a second Oscar nomination (and potential win) for Todd Haynes' "Carol." It's just a matter of whether The Weinstein Company will campaign them both in lead, or place Mara in supporting. The latter seems more like Harvey, and if that's the case we can pretty much guarantee that one of the category's five slots will go to Mara.

The mighty likes of Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Laura Linney, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ellen Page, Jessica Chastain and Helen Mirren are among the many actresses with seemingly supporting roles in highly promising films, alongside relative up-and-comers like Elizabeth Olsen, Dakota Johnson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw -- all hoping for their first nominations.

Or if Jane Fonda can rally a very small (but explosive) role in recent Cannes premiere "Youth" to her first nomination in decades. We shall see...
