Bear Grylls is welcoming a special guest to “Running Wild” when President Barack Obama joins him on an Alaskan adventure.
Grylls recently took part in a conference call with the press, detailing his time with the president, which he calls “the high point” of his “Running Wild” journeys. Here are five other things to look forward to on the presidential episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls.”
1. It was the president’s idea“We’d gotten approached by the White House saying would we consider taking the president on an adventure to Alaska. … As soon as he arrived, he was just saying, ‘Hey, I’ve been a big fan of the show and it’s great to meet you and let’s go and do it.’ It was awesome — let’s just go for it.”
2. Grylls enjoyed Obama’s company“My overriding impression was just that he’s a really humble, family-centered, lovely guy, you know? … He was excited to be there and it was fun to be able to kind of pull each other’s leg a little bit, in a way that if you just sort of meet someone in the White House with an interview situation, it’s difficult to do.”
3. The president got real about roughing it“You’re out there and you light a fire together and climb up trees and there’s half—-eaten salmons and you’re talking about flatulence and the berries and all of that gets out, you know? The connections always come. [It was] a huge privilege but definitely a fair side of the president you never saw before.”
4. The Secret Service presence was heavy “I thought initially they would have five or six secret Service guys with us that ended up being like 50. It’s a whole team. … [Beforehand] I was waiting on the riverbank and I can see all the Secret Service and the snipers positioned all around this mountain with the helicopters and it was like, ‘Wow, I am really genuinely nervous.'”
5.The ultimate goal of the show is serious“One of the big reasons he wanted to do this was to see some of the effects of climate change close up. He’s a dad and he wants to preserve the planet for his children’s future and I feel exactly the same way … it’s the only one we got and we want to make sure our children get to enjoy these wonderful wildernesses. So there was a great connection there.
“What really stood out for me was the little thing we did right at the end where we prayed together. It’s funny because it’s such an intimate thing to do, but we talked about faith on the journey and how he’d said one of his heroes is President Lincoln who said this quote that if you’re not religion when you take office, you will be by the end. It will bring you to your knees.”
