on the side

　　有两个常用的意思：

　　1 in addition to your main job可以像剧中一样翻译成“兼职”。例如：

　　a mechanic who buys and sells cars on the side

　　2 secretly or illegally第二个常见的意思就是“秘密的或者不合法的”，例如：

　　He’s married but he has a girlfriend on the side.

　　nickel-and-dime

　　nickel是五分钱，dime是一毛钱，都是超级小额的money，所以这个形容词的意思就是“不重要的，涉及钱数超级少的”，例如：

　　a nickel-and-dime job

　　dip into something

　　这个短语的直译就是“把手伸进容器取东西”，比如：

　　She dipped into her purse and took out some coins.

　　剧中的意思是to take an amount from money that you have saved，例如：

　　We took out a loan for the car because we didn’t want to dip into our savings.

　　rat somebody out (to somebody) = rat on somebody

　　To tell somebody in authority about something wrong that somebody else has done. 就是小学生经常干的“打小报告”，例如：

　　Someone ratted us out to the police.

　　Where I come from, you don’t rat on your friends.

　　A leopard cannot change its spots.

　　People cannot change their character, especially if they have a bad character. 就是我们的那句俗话：“江山易改本性难移”，或者“狗改不了吃屎”。

　　You didn’t really expect her to be on time, did you? A leopard can’t change its spots.

　　Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

　　这句话据说出自莎士比亚，可以翻译成“为王者无安宁”。不过也可以翻译成韩剧《继承者》里面的“欲戴王冠，必承其重”。
