　　Many took to social media in confusion over his comment, with some pointing out that the US only turned 243 on July 4 this year.

　　很多网友在社交媒体上表示费解，一些人指出，美国到今年7月4日才243年历史。

　　广大美国网友开启了群嘲模式：

　　One Twitter user wrote: "Our 243 year old country dates back thousands of years to ancient Rome — man of infinite wisdom."

　　一个推特网友写道：“我们243岁的国家可上溯数千年到古罗马时代——真是一位智慧无边的高人。”

　　Another joked: "It was during their first venture to Ancient Rome that the founding fathers discovered Spaghetios."

　　"Of course everyone knows that Julius Caesar invented the salad that bares his name and took it to New York in 44BC to share his cultural heritage," a Twitter user also wrote. 

　　还有一位说：“众所周知，凯撒大帝发明了凯撒沙拉，然后在公元前44年将这道菜带到了纽约，以共享这一文化遗产。”

　　就连前奥巴马政府的一位官员也发推说：

　　"FACT CHECK: The United States of America (1776 – present) never had ties with Ancient Rome (753 B.C. – 476 A.D)."

　　事实核查：美国（1776-今天）从来没有和古罗马（公元前753-公元后476）建立过外交关系。

　　不过也有网友为特朗普辩护，称他只是表示美国和意大利都拥有从古罗马时代传承下来的共同的文化政治遗产。

However, some commenters came to Mr Trump's defence, saying that he was referring to how Ancient Rome "bequeathed a great deal of cultural, legal and historical tradition to the Western world."
