Task 1:
1. Can you talk about an event happened in your school recently that you think it negative at first, but it turns out to be a positive thing.
Sample response:
This kind of thing happened in my school recently is that last year my school opened a compulsory class on cooking, teaching you to cook different kinds of foods, such as Chinese dishes or cuisine from other countries. At first I didn’t think it a good idea, because I used to rely on parents to cook meals for me. However, after months’ learning, I mastered many skills of cooking, such as how to fry, how to steam, how to stew and so on, now I can cook many delicious foods by myself and I get a sense of accomplishment. Two years later I will study in another country by myself, I think this skill may help me to be more independent. It turns out this course can be positive.
2. One of your friends has been working for ten years after graduation. Now he is planning to return back to the university to further study, from your perspective, what kind of challenge or difficulty does he may confront?
Sample response:
In my view, the most remarkable challenge for my friend might be that he may not well concentrate on his study.
Ten years later, returning back to university, my friend’s age might be around 30, at the age of 30, a man may have been married and even has a child; a part from study, he may have to care about whether his wife is in good condition or whether his child is ill or uncomfortable and so on. All these things may distract his attention. However, compared with those young people, they are at the age around 20; they have nothing to care about but their own study.
That’s my answer.
3. The local school in your town is considering to eliminate its long summer break and to get children to attend schools all year with only several short breaks, like 3 days off or 5 days off holidays. Do you think it is a good idea and why?
Sample response:
Personally speaking, I really don’t think this change is a good choice; the most remarkable reason is that this may deprive myself of traveling abroad.
If having the long summer break, taking a trip to another country for half a month or even a solid month can be convenient; I don't have to worry about the time and can have the in-depth traveling experience, such as getting to know what the local people eat every day, what the spectacular local landmarks or sceneries are, what their unique customs are and so on. If merely having the short breaks with 3 days off or 5 days off, I can’t fully experience the exotic culture.
4. From your perspective, what is the common mistake when parents educate their children? Give your explanation based on your own experience.
Sample response:
In my humble view, the most common mistake in my city is that some parents spoil their children too much.
For example, many high school students area round 17 years old; one 17-year-old boy or girl should be independent in his or her life to some extent. However, it’s common to see their parents wash clothes, even socks and underwear, for them, cook each meal for them, clean the bedroom for them and so on. Personally speaking, teenagers at such an age should not be so dependent on their parents, leaving everything to their parents. Parents are supposed to cultivate the independent ability of children. That’s my answer, thanks.
5. Nowadays many people choose to move to a new place to live for the sake of work, study or some other reasons. Can you talk about the disadvantage of moving to a newplace? Give specific explanations in your response.
Sample response:
Personally, the most striking disadvantage is unfamiliarity.
For example, now I am studying TOEFL to prepare for my overseas studying one year later. It’s easy to imagine when I move to a new country to live for two years or more, no matter America or Spain or Britain and so on, I might be unfamiliar with many things, such as which restaurant has the most delicious foods, which hospital is the most suitable when I am sick, where I can hang out with my friends and so forth, all of which may pose inconvenience to my daily life andI may have to adapt myself to it for a while.
6. Some universities are located in small towns or rural areas. Can you talk about the advantage and/or disadvantage of placing a university in such a place?
Sample response:
In my view, the most remarkable advantage is that this can help students save money. If the university is located at such a place, maybe the university is far away from shopping malls or recreational centers, then in the spare time students are less likely to go off campus to spend money on various movies, bars, delicious foods and elegant restaurants, new clothes and shoes and so on. However, if the university is located at the city center, you can imagine, after schools students tend to hang out in bars, eating in restaurants or singing in KTVs and so forth, then money will be spent or even wasted to some extent.
7. If there is a chance for you and your friend to open a company, which kind of company or industry would you like to choose and why? Give specific explanations in your response.
Sample response:
If having the chance, definitely we will open a small travel agency because we are fond of travelling. When having such an agency, we may travel to many countries around the world along with the clients. If there are guests going to Singapore, apart from taking care of the guests, I may also have chance to taste the authentic Singapore foods like Chili crab and admire the view of Marina Bay Sand and largest infinity swimming pool in the world. If there are guests going to America, I may get the chance to see the White House, the Niagara Falls and many prestigious universities and so on. I think opening a travel agency will enrich my life.
8. One of your good friends is about to study in a foreign university for one year, after finishing that year’s study, your friend will have to study another year in his own university to successfully graduate, which means he has to spend one more year to get his bachelor degree. As for this condition, do you have any advice to your friend, should he go or not?
9. The community in your school is going to start new courses at weekend for students to study, which of the following courses would you like to choose?
---courses on how to deliver a speech
---courses on improving your photography
---courses on business skills
10. The school newspaper is going to add a new section so as to better satisfy students’ need, from your perspective, which one do you think is the best choice?
--tips and advice on students travel
--restaurant review
--film recommendation
11. The government is planning to invest money in a certain field, which of the following field do you think should be given priority to get money support?
--land exploration
--education
--health care
12. Your university has just received a bunch of money donated by the generous alumni and which aspect do you think the money should be given to?
--a stadium
--a theater
--a game center
13. Your university is going to add new curriculums concerning real working situations to better satisfy students’ interest, which of the following choices would you prefer to participate?
---sport team management
---government administration
---TV programing
Task 2:
1. Some parents prefer to help their kids to solve the problems and troubles they meet, while some parents prefer to let their children deal with difficulties by themselves, which one do you think is more reasonable and why?
Sample response:
I prefer my parents’ help, cause parents are more experienced; with their help, kids may correct mistakes quickly and achieve better results. I remember when I leant English in my childhood, frequently I couldn’t remember words clearly and I often felt depressed. Knowing this, my parents gave the guidance, telling me once I learnt some new words, what I should do is review them as much as possible instead of just reciting them once; reciting once without reviewing is the typical mistake when learning language. Afterwards, whenever I learnt some new words, I paid much attention to how many times I have reviewed. Then I can remember English words well. I am grateful to my parents’ help.
2. Your university is going to allow citizens from the society to audit classes with undergraduates together without receiving grades or earning credits. Do you think this is a good program and why?
Sample response:
I really don’t think it is a reasonable option.
Firstly, this choice may not be good for undergraduates who are actually taking the classes for credits or grades. Those auditing students may not be well prepared; they may ask basic questions and even slow down the pace of class discussion. While those non-auditing students will spend a lot of time preparing for the classes.
Secondly, this choice may increase the work load of professors. If adding those auditing students in class, professors may have to prepare extra handouts, learn extranames or possibly answer those students’ questions and so on. All these will distract professors’ attention.
3. Children should listen to or read news at an early age. Do you agree or disagree with such a statement? Give your specific explanation in your response.
Sample response:
I agree with it, because this may equip children themselves with useful knowledge.
I remember clearly I was a crazy fan on sports news when I was a child. Everyday after school I would focus on the sports news for an hour, searching the news on my favorite football star, favorite team, excellent goals and so on. Afterwards when my elementary school organized a school football team, I was appointed as the captain because I was very familiar with many things about football, such as the rules, the organization and so on. Thanks to the sports news I had seen, or else I couldn't be so professional and got such an honor at that time.
4. Some teachers think competition will motivate students, while some teachers argue competition will exert adverse influence on children. Which one do you agree and why?
Sample response:
In my view, no competition, no progress.
Taking myself for example, now I am studying baking in a training school; every month the chef will organize a competition on baking bread and cakes. The chef will have the comments for every student on the time we use, the taste we bake, the profile we make and the skills we adopt and so on, and chooses the top 2 products. At first, I always lagged behind, but gradually, just because of the competition and comments, I learned from others and became at adept at using proper skills when baking my foods. Looking back now, if there hadn’t been competition, I couldn’t have made progress so quickly.
5. Some people prefer to have a job that has a regular schedule, which means you may go to work at 9 in the morning and get off work at 17 in the afternoon. Some people prefer to have a job that has a flexible schedule, which means you may don't have to go to work at a certain time and you can arrange your own schedule. Which one do you prefer and why?
Sample response:
Personally, I prefer the latter one.
Firstly, this helps me save time. I may arrange my schedule to avoid the traffic jam in rush hours. However, if choosing the first one, in my city when everyone goes to work and gets off work at a certain time, the traffic will be very congested, you may spend 2 more hours than the normal time in commuting.
Secondly, this may help me save money. For example, in my city, normally I may only spend around 10 dollars by taxi in commuting 15 kilometers. However, if choosing the first one and meeting the traffic jam, I may have to spend around 20 dollars by taxi in commuting the same distance.
6. Three months later you will be graduating from your university and you are looking for ajob. It happens the other day you got a job offer from one of your desired companies, however, the headquarters of this company is far from your dormitory. As for this condition, you are offered two choices on the interviewing; one is the telephone interview and the other is the face-to-faceinterview which entails a long journey to that company. Which choice would you prefer? Give specific explanation in your response.
Sample response:
As for these two choices, definitely I will choose the telephone interview.
One reason is this choice is time-saving. Staying in my dormitory, the moment the interviewer picks up my phone, the instant we can start the interview, it is very efficient. However, if having the face-to-face interview, I might spend 3-4 hours commuting from my house to that company.
The other reason is economical. Having the telephone interview, lasting 15- 20 mins, actually the cost might be no more than 2 dollars. However, if going to that company, in my city the transportation cost might be 10 dollars by subway and if by taxi, the cost might be over 100 dollars.
7. As for important business meetings, do you prefer to have face-to-face meeting or have the meetings through advanced technologies like telephones?
Sample response:
If I were the boss, I would recommend my staffs to have the meetings through something like telephones. The most remarkable reason is that this choice is very economical. When having the face-to-face meeting, if two sides are in different cities, then staffs from one company may have to go to another city, then money will be spent on airplane tickets or train tickets, booking hotels or restaurants and so on, the cost might be over hundreds of dollars. On the contrary, if having meetings through telephone, arranging a certain time, staffs from both sides just need to sit before the screen to have the meeting, the cost might be less than 5 dollars.
8. Some day in the future the library will be replaced by e-books and other electronic devices, then libraries will no longer exist in universities. Do you agree or disagree with the statement?
9. Nowadays some parents and students choose to have the home school, which means students listen to class and finish their assignments at home through the on-line educational system and they don’t have to go to the campus. Do you agree or disagree with this form of education and why?
10. While traveling, some students like to be isolated with their family members and friends; some students prefer to contact with family members and friends constantly, which one do you prefer and why?
11. When travelling in a new place, peopleconstantly need to find their ways to the places they like, some people preferto use the electronic map downloaded in their cellphones, while some peopleprefer to consult pedestrians, like native people or other travelers, face toface, which one do you think is better and why?
12. Your city isabout to build a new factory so as to provide more job opportunities forcitizens, however, the factory might lead to environmental pollution to someextent, do you agree or disagree to build such a new factory?
13. When visitingmuseums to see the exhibitions, some people prefer to take some photos whilesome people prefer to just look around, which one do you prefer and why? Giveyour explanations in your response.
