Compared with the past, we can see that the world has changed significantly with the result that many people attempt multiple tasks simultaneously. I agree with the notion that due to people being busy doing many different things, they can only do a few things well. There are two main strands to my argument.
Education is one area where people are required to focus on many things at once. Schools have become very intense and competitive for students, and there is no let-up in what is expected of them, even at a young age. A high school student, for example, has up to a dozen different subjects to focus on, as well as sporting commitments, social activities, and family life. This can lead to burnout even before the arrival of full adulthood. My high school is a prime example of this. Several of my friends really struggled with the workload imposed on them by their studies and other school commitments. This resulted in poor grades in many areas and has affected their career prospects. I believe it would be better to find out what students are most interested in and good at and prompt them to just focus on that area.
The workplace is another area where people are asked to multitask, often with detrimental results. Expecting too much from employees in terms of the range of tasks they should focus on, can lead not only to errors at work, but also health issues. My father is a case in point. He was a manager for a chain of computer accessory retail outlets and was required to concentrate on multiple areas of the business, from staffing issues, to stock ordering and delivery. He was also asked to take care of the online side of the business when it was introduced. He regularly complained at home of how many different things he needed to do in his job, and eventually he suffered stress-related health problems. As a consequence, he had six months off to recover, after which he returned to work and shared his role with a second manager. Having a narrower focus clearly benefited his productivity and his health. I think there is a lesson here for many employers who require too much from their staff.
To summarize, I agree that busy people are only able to do a few things well. Nowadays, the pressure on students to focus on many things at once is often counterproductive. Moreover, the modern workplace often exemplifies the problems that excessive multitasking can lead to.
