There are many different types of occupations available these days. Some require a variety of tasks whereas others do not. I believe that workers are more satisfied when given a variety of tasks to perform rather than just one monotonous activity. I will lay out my reasons for this viewpoint below.
To begin with, I agree with the adage, 'Variety is the spice of life.' This means that doing different things is stimulating for us, as opposed to just focusing on one task. This is evident in many things we do in life, starting at school. In my experience, school lessons are certainly more interesting and engaging when we have a variety of tasks to do rather than the same thing for an hour or more. A clear example from the workplace is my mother, who is a retail store manager. She has many different tasks to carry out each day, including staff issues, stock levels, customer complaints and so forth. While she always comes home tired, she also enjoys the different aspects of her job, and this is reflected in the stories she always tells us over dinner. The job is clearly more stimulating for her because of the daily variety of tasks involved. She used to work in a quality control job, which involved doing the same thing all day long. The monotony was a big problem, and eventually, she left because of this to look for more varied and rewarding work.
Secondly, as the world changes and brings us ever more variety in our life from electronic devices and the internet, people have become more used to variety and multitasking. In addition, the jobs market has drastically changed in recent decades as automation increases. Many monotonous jobs such as production line work are disappearing as robots take over. In the past, these single-focus occupations were the only option for many people, rather than their ideal choice, and if asked to decide, I feel most people would elect for a job with some variety. My friend's mother is a good example of this. She works a production line job, and she has many health issues, which she blames on her work. She says that she struggles to focus for such long periods on her single task, as the job requires, and has been looking for something with more variety for several months.
In conclusion, I strongly feel that employees respond more positively to variety in their work than monotony. It is more stimulating to have a range of tasks and also, as many single-focus jobs are disappearing, it is something that people expect and want.
