With today's global population totaling over seven billion people, the world has also seen a rise in large companies providing important products and services. Unfortunately, some of these companies also cause environmental damage, and there is a debate as to how to best deal with this problem. For me, the way forward is to impose higher financial penalties on these companies. I will explain why in the following paragraphs.
In the first place, these companies are in business to make money, so using financial means to punish them makes sense. If they realize their profits are threatened, they may well sit up and take notice. There have been many examples where these sorts of measures have been effective. One that springs to mind related to a chemical processing company in my country. They were releasing waste products from the factory into a river which, as a result, polluted a nearby beach. There were an outcry and demands for a solution to this dangerous problem. The company was hit with a record breaking fine, and this prompted them to take action by burying the waste underground in sealed containers. This highlighted how effective punitive financial measures can be in spurring companies to reduce their environmentally damaging practices.
Another point relates to how the increased financial penalties can be used by the governments that impose them. If the money is used in a constructive way that contributes to solving the problem, then higher fines and taxes on the companies can certainly be justified. I remember reading about a clear example of this a few years ago. An oil refinery was charged with water pollution that was affecting nearby communities. The oil refinery was producing a vital commodity for the country's economy and said the measures needed to reduce the pollution were too expensive to implement. The solution that was reached involved the company working with the government and paying a large fine. The government used the money to partly fund the building of a waste management plant to deal with the problem. This was a successful outcome for everyone and showed how extra financial penalties can be put to the best use.
To recap, I hold the opinion that higher financial punishments can help solve the problems of large companies negatively affecting the environment. By affecting the companies' bottom line, they are often shaken into action.
Also, higher taxes and fines can be used constructively to help fund measures to address the problems.
