5. 高分范文
Nowadays, we are bombarded with news twenty-four hours a day from television, newspapers, and online sources. I agree with the view that the media are less concerned with the accuracy of news than in the past and that this can cause harm to the public. I will explain my viewpoint with two arguments, outlined below.
To begin with, the rise of the Internet in the last twenty years has meant that the business of providing news to the public has become a lot more competitive. This means that news organizations are having to work harder to get their customers' attention. One result of this is the practice of using misleading headlines to get people to buy the paper, listen to the story, or click on the news item. This is a particular problem online and is often referred to as 'click bait'. In my own experience, I have found myself becoming less confident in the news due to misleading headlines. One online example recently suggested that two politicians had got into a fight during a debate. However, on clicking on the video, I realized they had simply disagreed during the debate. Over time this has eroded my trust in news organizations and the way they frame news stories.
Another relevant point concerns the deliberate spreading of fake news to influence opinion. The world seems to have become more polarized in recent years and, with advances in technology, it is now easier to target people with false news items for political gain. I have an American friend who told me that the US election in 2016 involved an organization who used the information about millions of people they had acquired from a social media company for political ends. Many individuals were targeted with untrue news stories in an attempt to influence the way they voted. This is clearly not a good situation and is something that needs to be addressed. While propaganda has existed in one form or another in most cultures for centuries, this is a new and more dangerous technology-led development. It has the potential to do great damage to the political workings of different countries.
In summary, I strongly believe that news media are less concerned with the accuracy of the stories they report than in the past. The battle for customers' attention has produced the concept of 'clic k bait' and its equivalent on television and in the print media. As well as this, new technology has led to a rise in fake news in an attempt to steer political opinion.
