Part 3:
Question 1
What can people do on social media?
Sample Answer:
There are a couple of things. One of the main functions of social media is to connect people, so people can achieve that through posting pictures or videos about their lives and they receive likes and comments as a sort of feedback. One good example of these platforms is Weibo, which is like the Chinese version of Twitter. Apart from that, we have something like Little Red Book, which is China's answer to Instagram but different in the sense that it's also an e-commerce platform. In a word, people connect with others and the outer world via social media.
Question 2
Do you think older people and younger people will use the same kind of social media software?
Sample Answer:
I wouldn't say so. I mean, social media is a rather new concept, something old people didn't get to know when they were young, so in addition to the fact that many social networking platforms are so complicated with all kinds of functions integrated, old people generally have a hard time using those applications. Even when they browse things on social media, they prefer more intuitive software like Tik- Tok, where you can simply swipe up and down to slide through different videos. On the other hand, young people are more adept with technology, so on top of the simple apps like Tik-Tok, they can roam in more complex social networking services like Weibo or Bilibili. So, in all, I would say the young and the old share some social media software, but there are some almost exclusive to young people.
Question 3
Do older people spend much time on social media?
Sample Answer:
Not really. I mean, many old people are hard of hearing or seeing, so staring at the screen can be quite a challenging task for them. Other than that, social media may not be necessary for them as a means to
connect with others, and the reason is that their intimate friends are almost always their neighbors, you know, people were less mobile those days, and they can stay in touch with each other as simply as walking next door. Also, if they want to know more about the world, they're more used to watching TV, which is something they've been doing for decades with a larger screen. So, they don't really see the need to use social media.
Question 4
Are non-social media like television and newspaper still useful?
Sample Answer:
They are definitely less influential than they used to be with the rise of digital media, but that doesn't mean they don't play a part at all. For some people, they trust traditional media more because the content has been carefully chosen and edited for accuracy and clarity versus the posts on social media where many different versions of a story could be presented therefore difficult for someone to process the information. So, non-social media are still decent sources of information. They're just not as popular as before.
