我们看到，这样翻译会使得译文不通顺，也不符合汉语的表达习惯。因此，我们应该把它译为：

　　大约有1/4的美国青年人没有阅读能力，这简直令人难以置信。

　　例2. Television, it is often said, keeps one informed about current events, allow one to follow the latest developments in science and politics, and offers an endless series of programmes which areboth instructive and entertaining.

　　分析: 在此长句中, 有一个插入语“it is often said”, 三个并列的谓语结构, 还有一个定语从句, 这三个并列的谓语结构尽管在结构上同属于同一个句子,但都有独立的意义, 因此在翻译时, 可以采用分句法, 按照汉语的习惯把整个句子分解成几个独立的分句, 结果为：

　　人们常说, 通过电视可以了解时事, 掌握科学和政治的最新动态。从电视里还可以看到层出不穷、既有教育意义又有娱乐性的新节目。

　　例3. All they have to do is press a button, and they can see plays, films, operas, and shows of every kind, not to mention political discussions and the latest exciting football match.

　　他们所必须做的只是按一下开关。开关一开， 就可以看到电视剧、电影、歌剧, 以及其他各种各样的文艺节目。至于政治问题的辩论、最近的激动人心的足球赛更是不在话下。

　　例4. Although perhaps only 1 per cent of the life that has started somewhere will develop into highly complex and intelligent patterns, so vast is the number of planets that intelligent life is bound to be a natural part of the universe.

　　虽然在某处已经开始的生命中可能仅有百分之一会发展成高度复杂、有智慧的型式, 但是行星的数目如此之多,以致有智慧的生命一定是宇宙的一个天然组成部分。

　　CATTI考试的时候要翻译一个段落，如何翻译，如何分句?

　　Whatever the source of the original tamed herds might have been, it seems entirely likely that much the same process of juxtaposition (living side by side) and control occurred in both southwest Asia and northern Africa, and even in Europe, among peoples who had an intimate knowledge of the behavior of wild cattle.

　　我们可以把整句话划分成5个分句：

　　分句1：Whatever the source of the original tamed herds might have been

　　分句2：it seems entirely likely that

　　分句3：much the same process of juxtaposition (living side by side) and control occurred

　　分句4：in both southwest Asia and northern Africa,and even in Europe,

　　分句5：among peoples who had an intimate knowledge of the behavior of wild cattle.

　　分句2是整个句子的主干，即“it seems entirely likely +that 从句”

　　但是，it是形式主语，真正的主语是that后引导的内容，所以,

　　分句3是实际的主干!主谓宾为：the same process occurred.

　　接下来，分句1引导让步状语从句修饰主干。分句4，5做后置状语修饰主干，且分句5中的who引导定语从句修饰peoples。接着，对句子进行翻译：

　　不管驯化的兽群起源何处，东南亚和北非，甚至是欧洲的那些对野生骆驼的行为了然于胸的人们都可能经过了同样的和他们要驯化的动物毗邻而居并逐渐控制它们的过程。

　　或者说的再通俗点：

　　不管驯化的动物从哪起源，在世界上不同的地区得到的都是同样的方法(juxtaposition和control)。

　　英汉翻译过程中需要采取各种翻译技巧和策略。长句的翻译没有放之四海而皆准的方法。翻译是一件非常需要创造性的活动，并不是字字对译或句句对译这样的简单语言转换，但不论运用何种技巧和策略都要有扎实的英汉两种语言的功底。
