　　One of the outstanding players in international rugby, he survived death-threatening bacterial meningitis in intensive care to make a remarkable comeback to the South African team in 2014. He played against Australia and New Zealand in the Rugby Championship and was then named man of the match in the November victory over England, in which he scored the decisive third try.
