That's because, according to researchers like John Burke of the University of Georgia, van Gogh was not painting your standard sunflower, but rather variants holding a singlemutant gene, thus resembling "wooly, chrysanthemum-like" flowers, reminiscent of "fuzzy pom-poms stuck on sunflower stems."
